Republican LD 8 State Senate Candidate, Frank Pratt, has claimed to be an education champion in his recently mailed campaign literature, yet his voting record in the legislature tells a different story.

Sharon Girard - AZ State Senate LD8 Candidate

Pratt Consistently Votes Against Public Education

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Pratt has demonstrated a consistent voting record against public education and in support of charter and private schools. In fact, the Arizona Education Association (AEA) has given Pratt an F letter grade in their annual legislative report card in 2017 and 2018.

While in office, Pratt has flip-flopped on education, time and time again. Pratt can’t be trusted to stand up for our students, for public education, or for our teachers. Voters deserve to know if Frank Pratt will stand up for children in the legislature or continue to allow our schools to fall behind. A glimpse at just the past two years offers insight into Pratt’s disregard for public education.

SNAPSHOT OF PRATT’S RECORD:

  • SB1521 (2017): VOTED AGAINST DECREASING CLASS SIZE:
Pratt voted against a bill that would cap class sizes at 25 and require a student to counselor ratio cap at 250 to 1.
  • HB2460 (2018): VOTED TO ALLOW PRIVATE/CHARTER SCHOOLS TO PURCHASE PUBLIC SCHOOL FACILITIES:
Pratt co-sponsored a bill that would require public schools to compile a list of unused buildings or portions of buildings to be sold to private and charter schools.

BILLS SUPPORTED BY THE ARIZONA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (AEA) THAT PRATT VOTED AGAINST

Here are just a few of the bills Frank Pratt voted for that the Arizona Education Association opposed:

  • HB 2404 and HB 2244 (2017): An attack on Arizona citizens’ constitutional right to the ballot initiative process, making the renewal and potential expansion of Prop 301 more heavily dependent on the legislature and governor rather than Arizona voters and educators.
  • SB 1042 (2017): Replaces “teacher” with “person” in state statute and lowers the bar for those who are allowed to teach our students in Arizona classrooms.
  • SB 1522 (2017): A state budget that does not reflect a significant investment education, nor provide a permanent salary increase for teachers.
  • HB 2545 (2017): An education funding model that supports high-stakes testing over learning.
  • SB 1416 (2017): Provides even more tax breaks for wealthy, multinational corporations at the expense of funding for our students and resources for teachers.
  • SB 1431 (2017): Expands Arizona’s private school voucher program, which has been cited for numerous cases of fraud, waste, and abuse, diverting millions of taxpayer dollars from our public school students to private and religious schools without accountability.
  • SCR 1034 (2018): Restructures Arizona’s Independent Redistricting Commission and waters down representative for minority, rural communities.
  • SB 1467 (2018): STO (School Tuition Organization) expansion.
  • HB 2663 (2018): A state budget that does not meet the demands of Arizona educators.

For all these reasons and more, please vote for Sharon Girard for State Senate. Girard has been endorsed by the Arizona Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers. If elected, Girard will make education a top priority, including restoring education funding. She is committed to supporting public education, teachers, and most importantly our students.
